What is collagen?
Collagen is a family of structural proteins found in the body, primarily found in connective tissue (skin, tendons, cartilage, etc), which makes up approximately 30% of our protein tissue.
How do you make collagen coffee?
Simple – just add 1-2 scoops of collagen powder in your brewed coffee, and stir.
Does putting collagen in coffee work?
Yes. It dissolves right away.
Can you taste the collagen in your coffee?
No! I can’t taste it at all. It just tastes like coffee.
Can I put collagen in my bulletproof coffee?
Yes and I recommend it. Simply add 1-2 scoops of collagen protein before you blend your coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and coffee.
So why do I take a collagen supplement?
The science around taking a collagen supplement is inconclusive. So why do I still take it? Well, simply because it’s a great source of protein. Our bodies need a constant supply of protein as we are always building and breaking down proteins, a process called protein turnover.
Think of it this way. If you are training for a couch to 5k, you start by running 1 mile a day and gradually gear up to 2 and 3 miles over time. But, why can’t you run a 5k right away? Your body needs to adapt to the new stimulus you provide or you could hurt yourself. Your body is very efficient at getting better to the stress you give it. So as we adapt to running, your cells and bodily processes get stronger and more efficient. This allows you to run further and further over time. One of the ways our body does this is through protein turnover.
So you know you need protein, but there’s a catch. Your body can only process so much protein at once. So ideally you’d feed your body protein at regular intervals throughout the day. If you do this, you provide your body with the protein it needs while not giving it more than it can digest.
By adding collagen protein to your coffee in the morning, you get at least 9g or more (depending on how much you add) of protein as one of the regular intervals.
