This healthy sweet potato fries recipe is the easiest way to get that satisfying crispy outside and soft inside french fry texture. This recipe is both great because they taste amazing and are completely healthy too!
Below I’ll go into why sweet potatoes are healthy and why I love them more than any other potato. The best type of sweet potato I love for fries (yes there are multiple). And, why sweet potatoes are my favorite complex carb.
So let’s dive right in
Are sweet potatoes healthy?
Yes! Sweet potatoes are nutrient dense, excellent sources of potassium, vitamin A, with 4g of fiber making them a complex carbohydrate.
Complex carbs are great because they are more nutrient dense with more fiber than refined carbs like bread and pasta. Complex carbs help you feel full for longer.

Are sweet potatoes better for you than regular white potatoes?
Both are high-nutrient food sources. You can read more about the difference in white and sweet potatoes here.
What type of sweet potatoes can I use?
Did you know there are multiple types? Over 5000 known varieties to be exact.
White, orange (like yams), or purple sweet potatoes work but I personally love the white variety the most. They seem to come out with the best texture. Orange can be a bit more moist and sometimes mushy and the purple a bit dry. But they all work!
Are sweet potato fries good for weight loss?
This is a more complex question. There is no one right food for weight loss. Losing weight requires a balanced diet that works for the individual and burning more calories than you consume. If you eat so that you go over your calorie expenditure in a day regularly, you will gain weight.
However, complex carbohydrates are part of a well balanced diet, sweet potatoes are real, whole food (not processed), and can give sustained energy especially after exercise. It’s my personal favorite carbohydrate for a post-workout breakfast.

How do you cut sweet potatoes into fries?
- Cut the tips off first (those don’t taste good).
- Depending on how long your sweet potato is you may need to cut in half.
- Then cut lengthwise into 1/4 – 1/2” strips. I like mine a little thinner to go into the air fryer so they are extra crispy.
How to cook sweet potato fries
The air fryer was made for this job. This is the PERFECT tool to create the crispy crunch on the outside and soft steamy middle you’d expect from a sweet potato fry. For the fastest, easiest way to cook healthy sweet potato fries, you need an air fryer.
Each air fryer will have its own settings. I cook mine (I have this one) at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, shaking half way through. Super easy and super fast!!
Second best option is the oven. However, this option is more time consuming and labor intensive. Cook the sweet potatoes at 450 degrees for 40-45 minutes, flipping at least twice if not three times for best results.
“The air fryer was made for this job.”
Here’s my recipe below.
Healthy Sweet Potato Fries Recipe
Equipment
- Air fryer
- Large bowl
Ingredients
- 1.5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tbsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 3 medium sweet potatoes
Instructions
- Cut sweet potatoes into 1/4" – 1/2" pieces
- Toss cut sweet potatoes in a large bowl with the extra virgin olive oil
- Then, add salt, paprika, and garlic powder, toss to coat
- Place one layer of sweet potatoes in air fryer, follow air fryer instructions to cook; i.e 400 degrees for 15 minutes shaking half way through
Notes
- If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake these, however it’s more time consuming and less consistent results.
- For less fat, you can ditch the olive oil altogether, it’s just more flavorful if you add it.
